While the need to buy travel insurance is a bugbear for many it's a vitally important process that can safeguard you from all manner of unfortunate situations when on your travels. Many holidaymakers are of the opinion that travel insurance policies are much of a muchness, so they'll naturally plump for the cheapest option with little thought about what exactly they're signing up for. That notion couldn't be further from the truth, so it pays to do your research before deciding on a policy.

The rise of comparison sites has made it easy to quickly determine the cheapest policy available for your set of circumstances - but while having such information at our fingertips almost instantly can be hugely beneficial, the act of moving from having done no research to having paid for your policy in a matter of minutes can be a dangerous one.

It's understandable that most people find searching for the best travel insurance policy to be something of a dry or boring activity and so are happy to have a facility by which they can get the process over and done with as soon as possible - but it's vitally important that holidaymakers are absolutely sure that their policy covers all of their needs before they sign on the dotted line. That means taking the time to read the small print and being aware of what - and what isn't - covered.

The lowest priced policy won't necessarily provide you with exactly what you need so it's worth getting out of the mindset that ‘cheapest is best'. That's especially true if you require specialist cover. For example, if you have a pre-existing medical condition then you're going to be much better off going to a specialist travel medical insurance provider and securing a policy that you can be 100% sure covers your needs. It might not be the cheapest cover around but by the same token, if you just buy the lowest price insurance you can find and fail to disclose a pre-existing medical condition then you could find yourself in a position where your whole policy is deemed void when it comes time to make a claim.

Whatever your situation, don't fall into the trap of automatically assuming that the cheapest possible policy is the one for you. It might be, of course, but by making completely sure that you're covered for every feasible eventuality and that you've disclosed every relevant piece of information, you can truly sit back and relax on your holiday knowing that you're well protected.
