Winter seemed to go on forever, and the British winter had a good deal of the population wishing they were in warmer climes, and for those who decided to take an overseas holiday their number one choice was Spain.

The Canary Islands were popular, with almost guaranteed good weather given their proximity to Spain, but while Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife saw a surge in tourist arrivals, so did other islands not necessarily associated with a winter break.

One of them was Majorca. One of the most popular summer holiday destinations in Europe, the Balearic Island is increasingly being seen by British holidaymakers as a viable option for a winter trip.

While it may not be as warm as its Canary Island counterparts, Majorca flights take half the time from British airports compared to flying to Lanzarote.

And the hotels offer good rates out of their normal season - The Canaries are geared up for all year round visitors it and their hotels don't have to cut prices as much as the Majorca hotels do to attract visitors out of season.

One travel site says that a visit to Majorca is good as the almond trees are in blossom, it's much quieter than other times of the year, and for those who don't just want holidays in Majorca for the beaches it's a great time to go, with the weather much warmer than in the UK.

If it's warm enough for a stroll along the beach, or maybe even a dip in the Mediterranean, fine. But what about days when perhaps the weather isn't good for that?

As well as the coast, there is rural Majorca, and the majority of holidaymakers don't get much more than a mile away from the sea during their trip, which is a shame as the island's countryside is certainly worth exploring.

By visiting the countryside, tourists will see the island's true history and the chance to sample farm life. Many older farm homes are transformed into bed and breakfast type establishments where families and couples can stay while on holiday.

Agro tourism is a growing concept. Holidaymakers enjoy the countryside and self catering holiday properties like villas, cottages, apartments and fincas are available to rent by the week. Located in charming villages, these living quarters offer character in a picturesque environment that the seaside resorts can't.

One way of combining all that is great about Majorca - the Mediterranean and the countryside - is to stay in Soller which has a picture postcard harbour and town, and take the steam locomotive through the countryside to the capital, Palma.

Beach or countryside for your next holiday? Choose Majorca and you can have both in one trip.
