We all look forward to our holidays as a time when we can forget our everyday worries and enjoy a well-deserved relaxing break. It's unfortunate, then, that these trips can often turn into stressful situations because of poor planning.

You can do your level best to prevent such occurrences by planning your trip well in advance and getting all of the important details ironed out as early as possible. That way, you minimise the risk of unexpected issues popping up while you're away.

Make sure you're covered

Give yourself complete peace of mind by taking out a comprehensive holiday insurance policy. While it might be briefly tempting to go for the cheapest deal possible, be sure to check out the fine print and choose insurance that covers your exact needs. By knowing that you're covered for the likes of lost luggage or medical bills will go a long way to allowing you to relax while you're away.

Pack it up

Start your holiday packing as soon as you can; leaving it until the last minute is a sure fire way to get your stress levels shooting through the roof! Write yourself a list of everything you want to take and tick it off as you go. It's also worth weighing your luggage at an early stage and comparing it to your allowance as you'll often have to pay a hefty charge if you exceed the limit.

Do your research

It always pays to carry out some research before you head off on holiday. The most obvious area to look into is accommodation; head online and check customer reviews for the places on your shortlist to ensure that you're going to be staying somewhere highly regarded. Similarly, look online for popular activities and restaurants in the area and make a list of the places you'd like to visit. Stay flexible where you can, though -- things don't always go to plan so it's best to be laid back and go with the flow at times.

Check your passport

We often take our passports for granted but if you've ever been in the situation where you can't find yours with less than 24 hours until you're due to depart then you'll know that it's a horrible feeling. Locate it as early as you can and check that it will still be in date and valid for the duration of your trip. Turnaround times on new or renewed passports can be lengthy so if you need to take action do it as soon as possible.

Draw up a budget

Holidays are often the time to cut loose and enjoy yourself but it's no good having a fantastic opening few days full of excitement if you blow your budget and leave yourself twiddling your thumbs for the second half of the trip. Know in advance how much you're happy to spend and adjust your daily outgoings accordingly.

Good planning goes a long way to helping holidaymakers enjoy their time away so be sure to get organised well in advance of your trip. A little bit of effort will ensure that you enjoy a stress-free holiday; don't leave anything to chance.
