From the Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka to the knockout stages of football's Champions League all across Europe, there are plenty of upcoming opportunities for fans to combine their love of sport with a holiday.
Gearing up for a sporting holiday can be incredibly exciting, especially if you're going because your favourite team have a chance of glory, but it's important not to overlook the essential planning you'll need to do during the build-up to your trip.
First of all, make sure you buy comprehensive travel insurance to cover your time away. Not all policies offer the same coverage, so it's important to do your research and pick the right insurance for your needs. For example, if you have a pre-existing medical condition then you'll be best off looking for a policy from a specialist provider that offers travel insurance for pre existing medical conditions.
If your trip will keep you within Europe, you should also apply for a European Health Insurance Card. The free card entitles you to cheap or free state-provided healthcare in a number of countries.
Don't be tempted to travel without tickets for your chosen sporting event as you may face disappointment as you're turned away at the turnstiles. Black market tickets may well be available outside the venue, but they're invariably priced at sky-high levels and may not even be genuine. Why take the risk? Buy your tickets from a reputable seller well in advance of your trip to ensure you get the experience you pay for.
Accommodation will get booked up quickly around any major sporting event so be sure to get yourself booked up as early as possible. If you leave it until the last minute then prices will invariably be higher - if you're even able to get a room at all. Also research local transport thoroughly before you set off so you can be sure that you'll be at your sporting destination in plenty of time.
If you're heading off for the duration of a long sporting even, such as the Cricket World Cup, be sure that your passport will be valid for the whole trip. Also be aware that certain countries will require you to hold a passport that is valid for a full six months, so that might need to be taken into account.
With the right preparation, a sporting holiday can be something you'll remember for years and years to come. Do your research and you'll have a memorable trip with no unexpected hiccups along the way.
