Many see cruise holidays as the ultimate in luxurious and stress-free holidays - but the fact is that without proper preparation your dream holiday could well turn into a nightmare. By spending the time to do your research and prepare the essentials in advance of your trip, however, you'll ensure that your trip is all smooth sailing.
First and foremost, be sure to take out comprehensive travel insurance before you head off on holiday. Not all policies are equal, so ensure that your chosen insurance covers cruise holidays - otherwise you could face a nasty surprise if it comes time to make a claim. Similarly, be sure to disclose any and all pre-existing medical conditions when taking out your policy. In fact, it may well be worth your while going through a specialist provider if you're looking for travel insurance with medical conditions.
As you'll be visiting a number of different countries during your holiday, it's a good idea to have a good read-up on each of them. This way you can plan your time as effectively as possible and wring the most enjoyment out of each destination before it's time to head back to the ship. If you'll need a visa to visit any of the countries you'll be calling at then be sure to arrange it well in advance of the trip to avoid any nervy last moment worries.
Make sure that your passport will be valid for the entire duration of your trip and beyond; some countries require your passport to be valid for at least a further six months before they'll grant you entry, so avoid a potentially embarrassing situation by double-checking in advance.
Once onboard, familiarise yourself with the layout of the ship at the earliest opportunity so that you know exactly where to head in the event of an emergency. Also locate the central desk as soon as you can, as this will be the place that will be able to best answer any general queries you might have.
Pack some seasickness tablets just in case - while you may not normally suffer from the affliction, choppy waters could soon change that. If you do start to feel nauseous, either head to the deck for some fresh air or consider positioning yourself in the centre of the ship as you'll experience less movement there.
As with any holiday, if you take the time to do sufficient research and plan accordingly then you'll be able to fully relax during the trip itself, safe in the knowledge that any potential problems can be dealt with swiftly.
