The traditional image of caravanning is of wet afternoons' spent playing cards or of traffic jams in the slow lane of the motorway. But think again! The industry has undergone a something of revolution in recent times and is presently in the midst of an unprecedented boom. According to VisitEngland caravanning businesses are reporting a 42% increase in visitor numbers as compared with 2009. One Hull based company Coachman saw orders for its range of new caravans for sale double at a trade fair it held in July, whilst the Swift Group based in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, is forecasting a return to sales somewhere in the region of £200 million.
Indeed several of the large caravan parks have recently embarked upon extensive programmes of investment in order to meet the increased demand. This bounce is in part due to the economic downturn but also to the sudden collapse of several holiday companies and the impact of Iceland's volcanic ash cloud. Wales, in particular, has emerged as a popular destination to the detriment of the more traditional locations, for example, Cornwall. Eric Nelson of the RAC puts this down to the principality's close proximity to the national network of motorways cutting travelling times. In the same vein caravanning is certainly more "eco friendly" when one considers aircraft CO2 emissions, lest we forget the inevitable delays that lie in wait for the weary traveler at the modern airport.
It has to be said that the range from static caravans to mobile homes and quality of the product on offer is impressive. For instance the typical platinum grade model which consists of three bedrooms, a lounge/dinner, a fitted kitchen and a bathroom, comes complete with fridges, satellite television, PVC windows and central heating, in fact, all mod cons. This can cost as little as £200 pounds to rent in low season rising to £900 in high season.
The facilities available at caravan sites have also improved beyond all recognition and their widespread distribution throughout the UK means that they are frequently located in some of the most picturesque settings. On arrival you will find that the large holiday parks now provide various forms of entertainment, sports and other leisure activities, as well as bars and restaurants, placing them on a par with their glamorous jet setting competitors in the marketplace.
The alternative of course is to opt for a private purchase. There is an enormous variety of holiday homes for sale in the UK to suit all tastes. These start at around £9,995 for a 35ft by 10ft three bedded caravan but if you fancy a something a little more on the luxurious side then you can pick up a 36ft by 12ft model for a not unreasonable £19.995. You can find for example a great variety of static caravans for sale on the web. If buying your own caravan is a bit too much for your poor wallet you can always go for the easy option: Caravans for hire.
It has to be said that caravanning has truly entered the new millennium and continues to create treasured and everlasting memories along the way. Caravanning is definitely "cool".
